Quit Smoking Program Overview

Everything You Need to Know about the Fresh Start Smoking Cessation Process

Mandeep, BC, Canada

Length of Smoking: 20+ yrs.

Amount Smoked Per Day: 35-40 cigs

“Being a smoker for 20+ years, you’re almost terrified, scared of what it’s going to be like to wanting to quit; the cravings, the withdrawals. I tried to quit before, I know what the cravings are like. I realized now that coming to the program at Fresh Start, I was stunned that I could go from 35-40 cigarettes a day, to zero. Truthfully tell you, I didn’t feel cravings. I’m sure that it has a lot to do with the fact that you’re detoxing in every way (lungs, liver, kidneys). All the different, specific protocols are set up exactly for you.”

Why Choose Fresh Start?

Smoking Cessation – Quit Smoking Retreat

According to the 2007 edition of Life and Breath, a report that utilizes the most recent available data for the surveillance of chronic respiratory diseases in Canada, over 3 million Canadians cope with one of five serious respiratory diseases:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Lung cancer
  • Tuberculosis (TB)
  • Cystic fibrosis.

Long-term smoking may lead to a host of respiratory diseases, such as poorly healing influenza, pneumonia, emphysema, bronchiectasis (damaged bronchial tubes), respiratory distress syndrome and sleep apnea. However, most quit-smoking approaches focus on a psychological component. As a result, the toxins continue staying post-smoking in your liver, lungs and other tissues. This increases the chances of health problems years down the road.

At Fresh Start, quitting smoking is not the only goal we want to achieve. We want to help you live a healthy post-smoking life.

Feeling healthy as you quit is the main reason why Fresh Start guests want to stay smoke-free after they quit. When you feel good, you get a new lease on life.

Why do you need the Fresh Start Program? Because:

You want more from life than just to exist from a puff to a puff.

You want to take a full breath every single time.

A Guest Story

Therese, ON, Canada

Length of Smoking: 42 yrs.

Amount Smoked Per Day: 20 cigs

“When I was asked on my pre-program consultation, if I’d like to incorporate into my program quit smoking protocols, I was not interested. My priority was my mental health and my emotional wellbeing… It was seeing my blood analysis, seeing the progress I was making the first week and how good it made me feel… it just felt so ridiculous to continue smoking… When I mentioned that I am considering quitting, right away I’ve got so many resources and support. I haven’t even had a smoker’s cough, I haven’t withdrawn. That’s been really weird.”

#1 Advanced Detox

Nicotine in cigarettes is the main addictive substance in tobacco. Its constant presence in the blood acts as an addictive drug, making a smoker take another cigarette even when he/she decides to quit. Eliminating nicotine and other toxic substances that your cells have accumulated over a long period of smoking can help decrease the chances of developing post-smoking respiratory diseases. Very importantly, it also helps you drastically decrease withdrawal symptoms.

Your withdrawal and physical cravings for nicotine are reduced because you will experience:

  • Decrease the toxic load and amounts of stimulant nicotine present in the blood.
  • “Clearing” of the taste buds, which means your sense of taste will change. Natural foods start tasting good, and bad substances become more unpleasant.
  • Eliminate smoke particles and tars from the lungs. It helps them cleanse and regenerate themselves, as well as to restore cells’ ability to carry oxygen.
  • Eliminate smoke-related toxins from different organs of the body, where they would be otherwise stored for months or even years.
  • Improve your body metabolism.

#2 Anti-Oxidant Support

When you detox from nicotine and other multiple toxins contained in cigarettes, your body utilizes extremely high amounts of antioxidants. Sometimes, this supply may run out, and when it does, it may lead to unpleasant side effects, such as broken capillaries or bruises on your skin. To supply your body with extra anti-oxidants, we included green smoothies and additional antioxidant supplementation.

#3 Healthy Nutrition

Counteracting Nutritional Deficiencies and Neutralizing Acidity. Because cigarettes are full of toxins, their use can lead to nutritional deficiencies. For example, one of the side effects of smoking is osteoporosis (leaching of calcium from bones). Calcium is a major buffer that neutralizes body acidity or toxicity. Tobacco has the most acidifying effect on the body, and because of it, your body uses up calcium, potassium, and other minerals at an accelerated speed. Our diet is specially constructed to serve your body’s needs when detoxing. It is organic, highly alkaline and contains large amounts of raw food, rich in minerals, vitamins and other nutrients.

When you eat live, vegan meals consisting primarily of fresh fruits, vegetables, greens, sprouts, seeds, and nuts, you renourish your cells, neutralize body acidity, and increase the level of antioxidants. As mentioned previously, antioxidants are super helpful with the prevention of health issues associated with quitting. Additionally, raw food is rich in fibre, which works as a mop, collecting garbage from your digestive system and other organs, and improves constipation.

Weight Gain Prevention. Our food helps ensure you do not gain weight when you quit smoking (unless you are underweight). Apart from other methods, most people who quit smoking at Fresh Start either maintain their current weight or lose extra weight.

Most people think that weight gain is just about calories. With raw foods, you will not have to think about calories. You won’t gain unwanted weight on it, even if you overeat it.

This is because the fibre in raw food is detached from carbohydrates (starch) and has a different structure than do the fibre and carbs in cooked foods. The starches in raw foods are less bioavailable, which prevents their accumulation in fat tissues. In an experiment, when they fed pigs with raw potatoes, the animals failed to gain weight, in contrast with those who ate cooked potatoes and gained weight.

Address Secondary Health Conditions. Most people who come to us to quit smoking, have a host of health conditions, such as high blood pressure, arthritis, bloating, constipation, unhealthy-looking skin and diabetes. Raw food has highly healing properties because of its high digestive enzyme content. Enzymes contribute to raw foods’ anti-aging properties and strengthen your digestive system.

Cooking at temperatures just slightly higher than body temperature leads to the destruction of virtually ALL enzymes.

According to Dr. Howell, about 40-60% of enzymes necessary for the digestion of every meal should come from foods we eat, and the rest comes from our pancreas. Consumption of raw foods allows for the taking off of a great load from the weakened pancreas (a major organ of enzyme production) and other glands and tissues that produce them, allowing them to rest.

The large amounts of vitamins and minerals in fresh foods undestroyed by heat provide a great source of materials needed to replace unhealthy tissues with healthy ones. This is critical for the healing of various degenerative conditions.

#4 Liver Cleansing and Healing Protocols

Fresh-squeezed Dandelion Juice, used in your custom protocols, is a top-quality liver cleanser that is safe and effective. Juice is liquid food up to 90% of which, according to Dr. Joel Robbins, is absorbed and utilized by the body. Because of this, juices are a great restoration therapy for the body tissues damaged by smoking, food additives, pesticides, parasites, and overgrowth of unhealthy bowel flora.

Dandelion Juice is extremely rich in chlorophyll, which is so amazing and similar in its chemical composition to our blood. So, you can compare drinking the juice with a healthy blood transfusion. Since your circulation may be severely impacted by smoking, green juices play an important anti-inflammatory function.

In addition to dandelion juice, we use Milk Thistle Shots and other herbal supplements to detoxify your liver.

#5 Daily Walks in the Ocean Air constitute a very important part of our stop-smoking program. They are important for general health and help the body oxygenate blood and tissues that are so desperately asking for it. Cancer cannot survive in an oxygen-rich environment. Plus, sunshine, fresh air, and exercise are the greatest antidepressants known.

Several times a week, we will take you for nature excursions, to break the cabin fever and to see amazing beautiful places, such as Elk Falls and Seal Bay Park.

In addition to the nature therapy, to assist you with cough and help your lungs heal, as a part of your Quit Smoking Pack, you’ll receive a hand salt inhaler and an aromatherapy necklace with special aromatherapy oils.

#6 Daily Educational Lectures and Videos are in-depth and inspiring. They will help you to create a healthy foundation for your life as a non-smoker. These are just a few things you will learn:

  • Which foods you should avoid to prevent more toxins coming into your body
  • How to self-nurture and strengthen your Nervous System
  • What do you need to do to help your liver detoxify and be healthy
  • How to improve your digestive health
  • And much more.

#7 Smoking Cessation Spa Therapies

Upon arrival, we will perform a live blood analysis and then repeat it (the retake is not included in the 7-day program). It is really amazing to see what is happening with your blood as you quit smoking. It motivates you to keep up with the change and realize that you want to continue being healthy.

Lung detoxification and restoration is the #1 priority in the quit smoking program, especially if you, like the majority of our guests, have been smoking for 15+ years. One of the primary therapies we will be using to help your lungs is halotherapy, or a salt cocoon. While you are lying down in a salt cocoon, the halogenerator breaks down salt into fine particles, similar to those located in the ocean air, but much more concentrated. As you inhale the pulverized salt particles, they purify your lungs by osmosis. In addition, salt is anti-bacterial and helps destroy viruses and bacteria.

Within the first week, you will also receive a salt body scrub. Along with steam baths, salt scrubs help your skin detoxify and regain its healthy colour and glow. Salt Scrubs are always followed by a short massage to enhance your circulation and detoxification process.

Other therapies that enhance body detoxification, such as Ionic Foot Detox Baths, Heavy Metal Detox Baths and Infrared Saunas, are also available.

#8 Custom Protocols

Each person comes from a variety of health and life situations. You may be suffering from adrenal fatigue, a dysregulated nervous system, insomnia, an advanced lung condition, or you may be plagued by menopause symptoms.

To support you in healing, we have a number of different supplements and drinks that can help specific body organs and systems in need to cleanse and self-restore more effectively.

After studying your health questionnaire, emotional wellness test, live blood analysis and organ screen, your Program Planner will design for you a special plan of custom supplements and drinks that will focus on your primary areas of concern.

We will review the plan weekly and adjust it as needed based on your improvements and present symptoms.

#9 Discovering Emotional Triggers

Smoking is, first of all, a coping mechanism. This is why 99% of our guests who come to quit smoking need emotional wellness work. Unless there is an indication that you do not need it, you will receive weekly 1-2 sessions with our Emotional Wellness specialist (Counsellor or Life Coach), during which you’ll determine a quit date (if you did not quit prior to coming) and with the practitioner will identify your triggers and the strategies how to cope with them when you go home.

Our Emotional sessions aren’t cookie-cutter. They are individualized to your unique needs, life situations and roadblocks preventing you from being smoke-free.

In addition to 1-on-1 work, you’ll receive a Quit Smoking Journal with special exercises to help you work on your triggers and let go of the “old buddy” you do not want to be with you anymore.

For people who suffer from emotional issues, we may include in their plan some energy treatments. Energy work, which may comprise Craniotherapy, Somatic Therapy, Reiki, or other modalities, is a great tool for releasing old, stuck emotions and relieving anxiety, panic attacks and past traumas that often manifest in physical issues, such as hip pain or whole-body inflammation.

#10 Dealing with Irritability: Fitness, Yoga, Meditation & Magnesium Baths

When quitting smoking, it is normal to experience irritability and anger. These are caused by the toxins passing through your Nervous System. Movement, daily meditation, and yoga classes will help support you through the process and calm down your body and emotions. In addition,  Sleep-enhancing tea served nightly, as well as Magnesium Baths, will help you relax and unwind.

#11 Massage and other Bodywork

It is critical to help all your muscles and joints relax so the body can start letting go of the toxins. This is why a relaxation massage is one of the first therapies you receive upon arrival.  Massages have other great benefits, such as improving mental well-being, enhancing blood flow and assisting the body with lymph drainage. If you suffer from muscular-skeletal issues, we have additional therapies for you, such as acupuncture and laser therapy.

#12 Group and Staff Support

While many people may think: oh, no, I do not want to be a part of a close-knit small group environment, based on the feedback of the majority of our past clients, interaction with other guests has been the most enjoyable and enriching experience that they had while at Fresh Start. When you are surrounded by like-minded people who have their struggles, you realize that you are not alone and start seeing your life situations from a new perspective.

Many guests shared that they learned from other participants as much, if not more, than from the program itself. More than once, we observed amazing synchronicities, where someone provided the answer to an issue another guest had, like a key perfectly fitting to a door.

The Fresh Start staff, from the kitchen to practitioners and instructors, is always here to support you on your journey to wellness.

Your Program Director will check with you daily to ensure that your questions and concerns are answered and to adjust your individual program as needed.

How Do We Guide You through Your Quit Smoking Process?

Though everyone who comes for the Quit Smoking program has the same main goal in mind, the underlying causes and concurrent health conditions may be significantly different. Over the years, we have designed an effective process of laser-focused goal setting, regular progress feedback and results evaluation, which is presented below.

Choosing specific goals does not guarantee that you’ll reach 100% of them, but it helps us design the most effective program, and you narrow down what is the most important aspect for you that if changed, will make the biggest positive impact on your life and well-being. And when that improvement happens, you pay attention to it, value and appreciate your effort.

Included in your program cost each week: about 7-8 therapies and $250 custom supplements (= $1,670).

FAQ

7 Days: JUMP START™

7 Days is great if you need a good JUMP START. It is best for people who smoke occasionally or for a short period of time. In most cases, this program length is not optimum for quitting heavy or prolonged smoking, but at times, it is all you can or need to do. The chances you’ll stay smoke-free after are 50-50, but seven days will give you an opportunity to get away and a short reboot.

14 Days: HEAL DEEPER

14 Days is great if you are tight for time, but you know that one week is not enough. You’ll be able to do a thorough cleanse and have quite a bit of work done on your body and emotional health. However, based on experience, this length of time is typically not long enough for the psychological part of the addiction.

21 Days: TOTAL HEALTH MAKEOVER

21 Days is the best choice if you need deep lung restorationemotional healing, and healthy lifestyle integration. If you have more on your plate, please do all you can to come for this length. Most 3-week guests said they needed a full 3 weeks to integrate the change and feel confident going home.

This length of program increases chances of staying on track post-program multifold because by that time a large number of toxins have left your body (those toxins are the main cause of physical addiction and cravings), and you’ve had enough time to deal with various waves of psychological cravings, related to emotional triggers, that you typically have developed a strategy what would be the best way to deal with these when at home.

  • Remove Yourself from the Situation Provoking the Pattern – being away from your environment when you quit is essential as it removes tons of temptations, such as places you smoke, easy cigarette access, being around the people you smoke with and daily routines you smoke around.
  •  Supportive Daily Structure – a daily program, including various classes, fitness, and other activities, will help you stay on track and keep you busy.
  •  Safe Toxins Removal– when leaving your system, hundreds of smoking-related chemicals may negatively impact your various body organs, leading to negative short-term and long-term impacts. We have designed a process to safely and quickly dispose of these toxins.
  •  Curbing Cravings – though it is not always possible to completely eliminate cravings, a detox component, in most cases, helps to dramatically decrease them due to nicotine and other toxins, leaving your system faster and more effectively.
  •  Decrease in Withdrawal Symptoms – most of our guests are surprised to experience little to no withdrawal symptoms.
  •  Lung Restoration – if you smoke for 20-30 yrs., your lungs need a lot of help. We have specific supplementation and therapies to help you support and start restoring these vital organs.
  •  Liver Detoxification – after years of smoking, the liver is full of toxins. In addition to this, the liver may suffer from unhealthy eating and negative emotions. Liver detoxification is a huge priority of your Quit Smoking program.
  •  Enhance Antioxidant Levels – when you quit, the entire system is under serious stress. Antioxidants are used with increasing speed and often get depleted. We ensure that your body is provided with the best nutrients and antioxidants to help it manage the load.
  •  Diet Free of Stimulants – decreased dietary stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol, and healthy nutrition typically drastically helps decrease cravings.
  •  Healthy Lifestyle Education – when leaving unhealthy habits behind, you want to replace them with healthy ones, and you need tools for this. While at Fresh Start, you’ll learn how to eat and live healthfully through a series of specially designed lectures and healthy food preparation demos.
  •  Exercise and Meditation –  these are indispensable for stabilizing your moods which can be easily disrupted by the quitting smoking process. During your program, there will be offered yoga, guided meditation and fitness classes.
  •  Supportive Small Group Environment – a small group environment is most conducive to supporting you through the process.
  •  Identify and Address Emotional Triggers – sessions with our emotional wellness specialists may be very beneficial in addressing underlying stress-coping mechanisms and other psychological aspects of the addiction.
  •  Body Treatments – these are so important to help you prepare and support your body in the deep work it needs to do, as well as to enhance detoxification and calm your nervous system. Plus most guests agree they are the most enjoyable part of the program.
  •  Decreased Risk of Post-Quitting Health Issues – when you quit, your body starts growing new healthy tissue. However, if underneath there are old toxic and rotten tissues, the new cells will grow on top. This increases the chances of various health conditions later in life, including lung cancer. A quality detox will help you minimize risks and will eliminate the gunk.
  •  Regain Energy and Motivation – when you increase your energy levels and clarity of thinking, you raise your motivation for the desired change. The entire program is focused on helping you improve your well-being, sleep and energy levels. To recharge your batteries optimally, we suggest 3 weeks.

The Fresh Start program is for you if you really want and are ready to:

  • stop the never-ending patching of your body with patches or cigarettes;
  • break free from the dependency of obsessively thinking about reaching for a cigarette, building your daily routine around them and wasting hours of your precious time every day on something that does not neither nourish you nor makes you more successful;
  • part with the concern of people avoiding you due to the nicotine smell no matter what deodorants and chewing gums you use;
  • actively work on detoxifying your body and restoring your lungs;
  • understand and deal with the underlying causes of the unhealthy habit;
  • make changes to your day structure and review your priorities to be able to eat healthier, exercise more and move in the direction that will create more balance for you, as well as for your loved ones;
  • be in a safe and healthy space where you can process your life situations without a glass of wine or a beer in your hand;
  • discontinue the constant self-sabotage in order to live a fulfilling life and be true to yourself.

Quit Smoking Program is RIGHT for you if you…

  • Had “enough” of smoking, are determined to quit and are ready to commit to a specific date and time.
  • Clearly understand that success and continuity of the outcome ultimately depend on your resolve and take full accountability for this.
  • Are an independent action-taker who does not need a lot of hand-holding (we won’t lock you up and will not take cigarettes away, and there will be people in your group who will be working on other health goals than quitting smoking).
  • You want to quit smoking and learn how to live the life of a non-smoker, not just to quit. You are interested in learning how to eat healthfully, revive an exercise routine and replace the habit with healthy stress management and self-care techniques. You understand that it takes time to change and acquiring tools is essential.
  • Your health deteriorated as a result of smoking, and you are looking forward to doing the work to improve it.
  • Quitting Smoking is your #1 Priority, and you are willing to dedicate time to doing it.

Quit Smoking Program is NOT right if you…

  • Consider quitting because others pressure you or because you intellectually know it is “not good for you,” yet deep down, do not want to do it.
  • Are looking for a magic “quick fix”, or that “silver bullet that will “make you quit” and will guarantee you’ll stay smoke-free forever.
  • You need constant individualized attention and hope that someone will be constantly checking in with you (we do not have staff for this).
  • You are looking for a program that is solely dedicated to quitting smoking (and do not want people working on other issues in the group).
  • You are looking for a 12-step Program similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, expect Nicotine Patches (we do not use these methods).
    • We are also not for those who put their hope into specific single methods (e.g., hypnotherapy, acupuncture, etc.)—we use a holistic approach and do not believe in “magic potions.”
  • You suffer from uncontrolled addiction to alcohol or drugs (we are not a rehab, do not offer medical detox and cannot provide adequate control).
  • You are not looking forward to working on your physical and emotional health; you are purely interested in getting rid of cigarettes.
  • Quitting smoking would be a nice thing to do, but you do not have a sense of urgency.

The detox process here is well organized and structured, and because of this most people have very mild symptoms. However, you will still experience some, especially on the Digestive Flushes days, when you will be going into a deeper detox.

Symptoms that you may experience during your program (the list is not exhaustive):

  • Headache (especially if you are withdrawing from caffeine)
  • Sleep disturbances (due to liver detoxing and/or pre-existing sleep issues)
  • Nausea, in rare cases vomiting (due to liver detoxing)
  • Feeling cold/lower body temperature
  • Sugar shakes, especially if there is adrenal burnout
  • Decreased energy
  • Sleepiness
  • Brain fog (due to removal of toxins)
  • Irritability
  • Skin eruptions
  • Increased sweating
  • Nightmares
  • Digestive bloating (due to toxic gases being eliminated)
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation (due to the removal of caffeine and other stimulants)
  • Going to the bathroom more often
  • Abdominal cramping (if old impactions are moving)
  • Bad breath
  • Increased body fluids odour
  • Mucous discharge from sinuses
  • Metallic taste in the mouth (a sign of heavy metal and liver detoxing)
  • Muscle aches and weakness
  • Skin itchiness

The symptoms above are normal and usually pass within a few hours or days. They are typically followed by a feeling of increased well-being and the lightness that you crave. It may take time to regain your energy levels back, especially if there was a previous burnout. If there are pre-existing health conditions, the symptoms may be more intense.

Some guests may be smoking while you are at the retreat. Various people may quit at different points of the program. And most importantly, keep in mind that not everyone on your program will be on the quit smoking journey.  While we specialize in quitting smoking, the program is not single-focused on smoking cessation. So please be prepared that participants in your group will be working on a variety of health goals. A huge benefit for you is that you’ll be able to improve some aspects of your physical and emotional well-being, too, in addition to quitting.

There is no one rule for all. Many people quit smoking right on the day of their departure to the retreat and ensure that they do not have any cigarettes with them or left at home. Some gradually wean themselves within a few days or weeks prior to or upon arrival.

If you decide to quit while at the retreat, you’ll need to decide on a specific date and commit to yourself and your quit smoking coach, with whom you’ll meet on the next day upon arrival. Also, we highly recommend that if you have any remaining cigarettes with you, you pass them to your coach. That way you won’t feel guilty about throwing them away or being tempted to take them out of the garbage bin.

Unless you have extreme levels of depression, we do not recommend you delay your quit date past 3 days upon your arrival. You will be doing a lot of work on your liver and lung health, and stopping the intake of toxins will help you to benefit from it in the most productive and asymptomatic way. Plus, we use a variety of healing foods, removal of stimulants such as alcohol and coffee, as well as intensive cleansing protocols to help you minimize your cravings.  Because of this, many say they either do not have cravings or have less than expected.

With all of that said, you are the one in charge of your quit date. If you are in a very “raw” state and need time to stabilize your emotions before quitting, you will have the extra space and time you need.

The very idea of having a contraindication to quitting smoking may seem absurd to you. Isn’t it always a good idea? The answer is a “yes” and a “no”. Yes, when you are ready, you should quit. We’ll back you up on that. However, there are certain circumstances when it is better to slow down or delay quitting.

Having helped hundreds of people quit smoking, here are a few facts we’ve learned about quitting smoking:

  • Quitting Smoking puts a huge load on your body’s organs and systems involved in eliminating toxins, particularly the GI tract, liver, kidney, heart, and digestive organs. If these organs are in rough shape, it may overload them. The recent failure of any of these organs or the inability of that organ to eliminate effectively may put the weakened organ’s health at risk.
  • If the person suffers from extremely advanced emotional issues, such as intense grief or acute depression, quitting simultaneously may feel overwhelming. We’ve had some people who came with severe depression quit successfully, but they had a very strong determination, strictly followed the offered plan and actively participated in all aspects of the program. They worked 80% on the emotional aspect and only 20% on quitting smoking. Most importantly, they had a high sense of self-accountability for the outcome and willingness to push through discomfort… Yet, dealing with depression and quitting smoking has its challenges.
  • Detoxification may partially eliminate medications, which may cause destabilization, particularly if you are on a large number of those or if you take advanced mood stabilizers, anti-convulsants or opiates.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Contraindications and precautions below are conditional and depend on many factors, including your age, years of smoking, emotional resiliency and severity of the condition. Most of them are not absolute.

  • Advanced conditions of the liver, intestinal tract and kidneys, such as cirrhosis, hepatitis C, current liver pain, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, kidney stones, kidney disease, etc. Gallstones are not an absolute contraindication, but they increase the risk of the stones moving due to detoxification. Note: If you suffer major constipation, it is important that we work on it simultaneously because if your body cannot properly eliminate toxins, it is not safe to quit.
  • History or current organ insufficiency or failures, including fluid retention in lungs or other body organs or tissues due to heart or kidney malfunction, etc., is a precaution.
  • Objection or contraindications to colonics and digestive flushes (salt drinks), as those are essential to safely eliminate toxins.
    • We may still work if you cannot do them, but please remember that when you stop smoking, we deal with a “massive chemical spill” into your system. When you do not flush the chemicals rapidly, some may get reabsorbed/ redeposited inside your body tissues. Since our food is rich in fibre, it helps tremendously with moving the toxins out, but colonics and flushing have the most powerful effect.
    • If the function of organs such as the liver and kidney is impaired, the body’s inability to eliminate toxins quickly may put one’s health at risk.
    • Colonics contraindications include unrepaired abdominal/inguinal hernia, colon surgery, redundant colon, abdominal pain, severe pain during previous colonics, current colon infection or bleeding, diverticulitis, fissures/fistulas, severe anemia, hemorrhoids, abortion/miscarriage in the last six months, abdominal aneurysm etc.
  • Advanced systemic conditions, as well as whole body inflammation including diabetes Type 1, HIV/AIDS, cancer, post-cancer, neurodegenerative, autoimmune, etc. You may still be able to quit during your first program visit, depending on how much is on the plate, but we need to assess to ensure how soon it is safe to do so it is not too much for your body.
  • Advanced cardiovascular diseases including congenital heart disease, organic valve disease, history of heart attack or stroke (some mild cases a long time ago may be okay), angina, atrial defibrillation or murmurs, thrombosis, uncontrolled and very high blood pressure, severe arrhythmia, etc. Depending on the severity, you may still be able to quit, but we need to assess to ensure it is not too much for your body.
  • Epilepsy – active detoxification may increase the risk of seizures.
  • Multiple medications – one to four prescriptions are not likely to be a problem, but if you on 7+ drugs, it may not be safe for your body to flush toxins rapidly.
  • If you are on anti-psychotic meds and have a history of psychosis or suicidal attempts. Your body may partially flush out anti-depressants, so if this majorly destabilizes you, quitting smoking may not be the best for you until you feel better.
  • Extreme Depression. While many of our guests with grief and other mild to moderate emotional issues have successfully quit, some with advanced depression were not able to quit or remain smoke-free for a long time due to heavily relying on smoking as a crutch. In spite of this, most of them were able to decrease the amount significantly and felt better.
  • Picky Eater/ Food Texture Issues – we serve organic vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free meals with high content of raw foods, including vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds. If you are not able to stay on this diet for a few weeks, this program will not work for you.
  • 50+ years of smoking and/ or age 70+ represents a higher risk due to potential severe degeneration of some elimination organs. The degree depends on your current health level and past health issues. In some advanced cases, you may need to quit within 2 program visits. The ability to do colonics and/ or flushes here is an absolute must!
  • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding – due to the risk that released toxins may affect the fetus/ baby.
  • Current uncontrolled alcohol or drug addiction – Fresh Start is not an addiction treatment centre. Every guest who was able to stop smoking, quit drinking or get off marijuana did not cheat by his/ her own will. While we provide support, structure and guidance, we are not a rehab.
  • Low level of inner motivation and urgency to quit – despite the large variety of tools offered here, it is up to you to make a firm decision to quit and stick with it thereafter.

Behaviour during the Program

All guests are expected to be respectful and able to behave adequately in the group environment. Lashing out at others, foul language and similar disruptive behaviour may lead to the Program Director or other staff asking the person to leave. The remainder of the credit may be used within 2 years by another person, provided he/she meets our admission requirements.

Smoking Areas

Ocean Resort, where we run the programs, is a completely non-smoking Resort. Smoking is not permitted in the room, on a balcony, in the proximity of other guests’ rooms, or in public spaces. A Designated Smoking Area is provided outside and away from the buildings. Please be aware that the Resort will charge a cleaning fee, request the guest leave the premises, and blacklist anyone who breaks the rules.

Drug and Alcohol Use

Please keep in mind that the Resort has a zero-tolerance policy for hard drug use on the property and alcohol use in public areas.

While Fresh Start does not control alcohol use in rooms or outside of the Resort, we expect guests to abstain from it for the duration of the program. If a person is suspected of hard drug use or non-controlled alcohol addiction, he/she may be referred to rehab and requested to leave with the remainder of the program credit to be used within 2 yrs. by anyone he/she sends at a later time instead of him/herself, provided the person meets our admission requirements.

Early Departure Disclaimer

Fresh Start is not responsible for lost airplane tickets or other expenses related to early departures, such as lost room nights at the Ocean Resort or other hotels, regardless of the reason for the early departure. We recommend that you purchase last-minute trip cancellation insurance and/or a ticket with the option of changing dates. Life happens.

Disclaimer:

We will not be confiscating your cigarettes (or cigarettes of others) forcefully, and we won’t be able to prevent you from jumping into a cab to get some. While we provide as much support as possible with cravings and emotional work, you need to be determined to quit and to take full responsibility for the process and outcome. In other words, we cannot quit for you or without you.

We cannot guarantee that you personally will 100% have no cravings, because all people are different. Nor that you will stay smoke-free forever, because we know that you will come back to the real life and will need to figure it out.

Though majority of the people who thoroughly followed the process quitted successfully, the Fresh Start program is not a “magic bullet” or “bullet-proof” and requires hard work on your side during and after.

If you are ready to take this important step in your life, we’ll show the way.

You are your own best guarantee.
